The Aberdare Community School building at the Ynys site forms part of Rhondda Cynon Taf council’s £50m leisure and school complex opened to staff and pupils in May 2015.

The school formed last September as Aberdare High, Aberdare Girls and Blaengwawr secondary schools merged, with 1,400 pupils split between the three old sites in Cwmdare, Plasdraw and Aberaman for the majority of the 2014-15 academic year.

The three storey building, built by Lang O’ Rouke has a light and open double-atrium design, with a prevailing cream and lime green colour scheme throughout. It is designed with ‘break-out areas’ for learning, independent from the classrooms and within carefully designed corridor spaces. The school also includes a gym and dance area, independent of the state-of-the-art Sobell leisure centre to which the building is attached.
